Recently heartbroken, Simon (Brady Corbet) travels to Paris to clear his head. After several days of wandering aimlessly, Simon finds himself drawn into a sex parlor and has a sexual encounter with an exotic prostitute, Victoria (Mati Diop. The chemistry builds between the two until they find themselves in a serious relationship, one that leads to blackmail and betrayal through Simon's penchant for other girls and the ultimate revelation of Simon's true nature.
Simon is an American white boy in Paris. A compelling character study of a man who might or might not be a sociopath since sociopaths have minimal need for other humans or attachments, but definitely has a major personality disorder and he likes to have control over women, but not in the traditional way. He starts by making them sympathize with him and then takes over their lives which is even worse than it sounds. The acting by the lead actor, Brady is fantastic. You can sense that there's something wrong with this guy from the beginning even if you don't know the name of the movie. His relationship with Noura/Victoria is deliberately weird without any underlying chemistry between them. In fact, both the actors (both leads are the writers as well) are very emotive and also free with their bodies.
The score is intense, the camera-work is voyeuristic, claustrophobic and acts like a peripheral vision effect throughout. Then there's the periodic throbbing strobes of blue and red light through transitions which drains you out, all of which are meant to showcase Simon's view of the world. This is almost an art movie. The ending with Noura still alive and Simon walking away thinking he had killed her was really inspired. What makes the movie though is the fact that Simon could be any regular guy you meet on the street, which makes you feel very uneasy for the safety of the people you know. A realistic take on a disorder very close to sociopathy and a good movie, but not really recommended for everyone.
Simon serial killer movie. Movies, A Jilted Lover Unleashed in Paris Movie Review Credit. IFC Films Simon Killer NYT Critic's Pick Directed by Antonio Campos Drama, Thriller Not Rated 1h 41m “Simon Killer, ” like its sidling antihero, isnt an easy film to like. Or sometimes to watch. Shot in a style that resembles a nostalgic Instagram filter labeled “seedy-noir, ” the films darkly saturated images unsettle more than inform. That unease continues in the story, a vague yet mesmerizing tale of emotional isolation and mental degradation. Expressed in an oblique, slow-reveal style, the incremental unhinging of Simon (Brady Corbet, outstanding) a recently dumped American looking for distraction in Paris, occurs with disconcerting ambivalence. Desperately lonely, he haunts museums and movie theaters, a bland, attention-seeking missile who tells more than one young woman that his work involves studying the link between the eye and the brain. That bond is emphasized when Simon resorts — in one of the films few amusing scenes — to online pornography and, later, stops during a sexual encounter to stare at (and sniff and lick) his uncomfortable partner. As Simons relationship with a sweet young prostitute (Mati Diop) shifts from erotic to criminal, the director, Antonio Campos, engineers a pervasive atmosphere of crawling dread. Hostile strangers lurk on rain-streaked streets, and Joe Andersons restlessly wandering camera scans for trouble, then abruptly backs off. Sex is explicit and often captured from the waist down, underscoring the detachment that Simon seems unable to overcome. And though the films ice-cold blend of the cerebral and the atavistic can be off-putting, it enables a queasy portrait of moral disengagement that lingers long after Simon has slipped from the screen.

Jan 01, 2016 Grade: B- A recent college graduate goes to Paris to forget his troubles following a breakup. Corbet is fantastic as the myopic and completely unlivable Simon who slowly seems to be unraveling as his manipulative behavior escalates throughout he film as he uses and controls and damages all the women around him. The real reason to watch this tough to watch full is the direction from Campos which is assured in tone and style with claustrophobic framin, over the back follow shots, and blaring electronic music that punctuate scenes. Easier to appreciate than to like. Grade: B- Oct 28, 2015 Filled to the brim with empty artiness pretentiousness with no substance. Stop. Just not too into the story overall Aug 31, 2015 After a devastating breakup of a five year relationship, Simon(Brady Corbet) decamps for Paris where luckily he has a friend who has an empty apartment he is willing to loan him. While there, he does all the normal touristy things. But his attempt to pick up two young women on the Metro falls flat. So, he decides to try a professional establishment... It's all well and good if there is ambiguity concerning a leading character. One of the problems with "Simon Killer" is that the filmmakers clearly have no idea what to do with their title character, whether he is wounded, troubled or something much, much worse. To his credit, Brady Corbet fully immerses himself in the creepiness of his character. This comes at the cost of making him unlikable not just to the audience but also to any other characters which would make any kind of meaningful connections that Simon has kind of hard to believe. Jun 23, 2015 Simon Killer is hypnotic, stylish, and has a killer soundtrack, but it's style over substance. Clearly. Brady Corbet and Mati Diop are fabulous, but Antonio Campos tries too hard to make this an artsy, sensory overload experience. It's just dull and oftentimes very unwatchable. The pace is deliberately slow, scenes go on longer than they need, almost as if director Campos is forcing the viewer to experience the discomfort and alienation of his central character. Excellent use of sound, and well acted. It's the kind of subject matter Michael Haneke explores, but not quite in his league. An often very uncomfortable watch. I dunno yall, i thought it was great. liked it way more than afterschool which didn't stimulate me. i think all men are capable of simon's horrible tendencies and i walked away wanting to be a better human being by NOT being anything like simon. 0 of 0 users found this helpful 0 0 The movie's icky, seedy main character is it's greatest strength. Overall, somewhat entertaining and visually cool sometimes but for the most part feels like a hidden camera on someone who is a bad person and is getting away with it. A very interesting character study that dwells deep in a dark thematic yet the pace is problematic and it cost me a lot of work to immerse myself because the character itself is not really that engaging because even thought it's a interesting disturbing individual, he's also very unlikeable A very interesting character study that dwells deep in a dark thematic yet the pace is problematic and it cost me a lot of work to immerse myself because the character itself is not really that engaging because even thought it's a interesting disturbing individual, he's also very unlikeable but I do understand it's necessary because that's what it's ultimately portraying: a sociopath.
